By shot peening the surface of objects can be compressively stressed. This is normally done using metal targets, however the same process can also be applied on ceramics.
Where is shot peening on ceramics performed (both commercially and as R&D activity)?
By means of shot peening, takes place a plastic deformation of metallic surfaces and only in this way the surface is solidified. Ceramics have no plastic deformability at all and can not be solidified. On the contrary, the ceramic surface can be damaged by shot peening (microcracks can form) and weakened.

We are involved in the laser shock peening of advanced ceramics at the Coventry University, UK. Our group was awarded with an ultra high energy laser from EPSRC. We are actively involved in laser shock peening of metals and ceramics. Dr. Pratik Shukla is mainly leading the work on laser shock peening of ceramics. One of his publication on LSP of SiC has been accepted in Journal of European Ceramic Society.

Could you tell me what compressive stress level can be obtained in ceramics using LS peening and what depth does this stress reach below the surface?

Hi Erik,
We measured a compressive stress of 97 MPa in the SiC samples. This is surface residual stress which was measured using X-ray diffraction technique. We are now measuring residual stress using incremental hole drilling technique. I will send you a copy of our publication once I get one. It is yet to come online.

Did you measure the stress in the material also before LS peening treatment?
Ceramics can have considerable residual stress from their manufacturing route, and with such high stiffness (E>435 GPa) a little strain as 0.1% provides already a (much) higher stress in the material....

We measured the RS in an untreated SiC to be 101 MPa (tensile stress).
I understand your point, but we have measured a tensile stress in the untreated SiC.
