I'm trying to trace the origin of this concept which seems to have been around the fields of directed evolution and protein engineering since before 2004. Was this a slow consensus to emerge from the field or can that paradigm shift be attributed to a particular researcher?

No immediate impact on research but I would like to be able to give due credit in lectures.
