As a team in the World Seastems project we analyze ports and port cities via their connection to both land and sea transport networks. We use OpenStreetMap data for the recent/current global road network and VMAP0 for an older and simpler version of it, namely for the 1980s.

Is there any printed (paper), scanned (digital), or even vector-like data source we can access to extract or use such information, precise enough to be compared to more recent networks we have?
