With the recent advancements in quantum computing and the demonstrations by IBM, Google, and other companies, it is not any more a question about whether the quantum computers will break all the security systems (including the blockchain architectures), but when. So, in your opinion when this will happen? and what precautions need to be taken before that happen to keep electronic systems secured worldwide?

Based on the last research directions, it is expected that Q. computers will be within the reach of approximately 5% of people in the upcoming 5 years and that's really a big challenge for all cryptocurrency users. The main focus of researchers and the industrial as well in this current time is how to build more robust algorithms than ECC and RSA that could be unbreakable and Q. resistance. The two main Q. algorithms right now that might challenge asymmetric cryptography and hashing are Shor’s and Grover’s Algorithms which they can be used to reduce the number of steps to factor big numbers, hence, compromising the secret.

In the current research scenarios, quantum computers can very easily break the ECC algorithms, and mainly very large factorization problems. In blockchain, an adversary has to verify block hashes for all following blocks before a miner solves the difficulty puzzle. The current computation in most cases cannot support such heavy operations. But, with quantum computation, parallel hash generations are possible, and hence more complex cryptographic techniques like rubric cube, superposition, lattices needs to be clubbed current blockchain verification systems to form a post quantum blockchain network.

If I understand every thing correctly .. I believe that, currently, Q.C is not able to break into the security measures of hash-265 based BCs. I think that the max. number of gates available in the current Q. computers is 16. Thus, even if Q. computers reached the 265 gates, a HARD FORK can actually solve this and and a stronger hash function can be deployed.
