Hi, I have a doubt as to when to use small and finite sliding formulation for defining contacts in ABAQUS. In the ABAQUS manual, it has been said to use Finite sliding when the slave node is expected to travel more than one element size of master. In this website, I came across an answer where Finite element sliding was asked to be used when even the slave traveled only 75% of element size of master. So, how much is a good travel distance to decide between Small and Finite sliding approach?
And are these small and finite sliding formulations decided purely on the basis of the mesh size of the master?

When using the small-sliding formulation, Abaqus/Standard establishes the relationship between the slave nodes and the master surface at the beginning of the simulation. Abaqus/Standard determines which segment on the master surface will interact with each node on the slave surface. It maintains these relationships throughout the analysis, never changing which master surface segments interact with which slave nodes. If geometric nonlinearity is included in the model, the small-sliding algorithm accounts for any rotation and deformation of the master surface and updates the load path through which the contact forces are transmitted. If geometric nonlinearity is not included in the model, any rotation or deformation of the master surface is ignored and the load path remains fixed.
The finite-sliding contact formulation requires that Abaqus/Standard continually track which part of the master surface is in contact with each slave node. This is a very complex calculation, especially if both the contacting bodies are deformable. The structures in such simulations can be either two- or three-dimensional. Abaqus/Standard can also model the finite-sliding self-contact of a deformable body. Such a situation occurs when a structure folds over onto itself.
The finite-sliding formulation for contact between a deformable body and a rigid surface is not as complex as the finite-sliding formulation for two deformable bodies. Finite-sliding simulations where the master surface is rigid can be performed for both two- and three-dimensional models.

In small sliding analysis every slave node interacts with its own tangent plane on the master surface and consequently slave nodes are not monitored for possible contact along the entire master surface. Thus the small sliding is less expensive computationally than the finite sliding contact.
In finite sliding contact requires that master surfaces to be smooth which it must has a unique surface normal at all points while the small sliding contact does not need master surfaces to be smooth.
