Part of this is due to the disruption of the phosphorylation process resulting from the energy conversion process by the chlorophyll during photosynthesis. P plays a major role in the energy transfer processes or "energy currency" in the plant by its role in ATP and ADP. Lack of P in the plant can distort the health of the chlorophyll (even though P is not a part of chlorophyll). Anthocyanins are careteniod compounds that are present in the plant but they are normally masked by the healthy green color of the chlorophyll. When the chlorophyll is unhealthy, the anthocyanins are unmasked so that they can be seen as a reddish or purplish color.,
