Of course, 5G brings amazing applications and enables great technologies, such as remote surgery, but there is no free lunch!
First, due the the nature of mmWave frequencies, which were already designated in 5G NR (Release 15), the coverage areas will be decreased, which in turn increases the number of base stations to be deployed. This will subsequently boosts the CO2 emmisions that is a main issue from environmental perspectives.
However, if you can come up with an intelligent solutions, you can deal with this and reduce the power consumptions of the network. Please see below work, where we are intelligently switching off base stations if they are underutilized:
Moreover, another concern would be data privacy, since everything is envisioned to be connected (IoT, IoE), thus huge amount of data will be generated. This is supposed to be managed properly, otherwise there could be some security/privacy breaches.
Lastly, effects of intense EM radiation on human health should also be investigated.
I see that this question is important and deserve large sharing from the colleagues on the researchgate.
Every technology or advancements in a technology brings with it goddess and badness. If the advantages overweight much its disadvantages then the cost will be affordable and acceptable. This applies for the the 5G wireless communication technology. The most important gain is to widespread the information transfer and the telecontrol and telemeasuring. As the depth of the management and control increases in the society, many resources will be used efficiently.
The price may me more hardware, more software and more complexity of the systems. This in addition to more energy consumption especially in the processing the data. According to the environment it will be more contaminated by the wireless energy emitted in it from billions of sources.
Fortunately, as one increases the density of the base sations the transmission energy will be reduced. Also with the utilization of MIMO the energy will also be reduced. 5G is thought to optimize and advance the wireless communication systems.
I totally agree with Dr. Abdelhalim abdelnaby Zekry
Many people talk about densification as a bad thing, but with many Base stations comes power control and reduced power to prevent interference. Beamforming means directing transmissions from point to point instead of omnidirectional in all directions (as happens now).
Overall, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages with a large margin
