I want to upgrade a network infrastructure to include 1000Mb switches and 10/100/1000 auto sensing network interface cards in each desktop. Recommend the cabling type that you would use in this network. Also, I have 100BaseTX cabling, and I need to provide access to a machine that is located 400 meters from the switch. What strategy could be used to accomplish this task?
I was thinking about going with CAT 6 and using VDSL2 technology, which can transmit data up to 400 meters without having to add expensive Ethernet switches or cables to extend the network reach. Has anyone used this VDSL2 and know if this would work or should I go with a basic CAT 5e and use switches?

This is just a scenario where the first part of the question is to recommend a cable type for the 1000Mb switches and the 10/100/1000 auto sensing NIC...The second part is referring to the 100base-TX that needs to be ran to a machine 400 meters from the switch in the first part of this scenario. A VDSL2 converts your data from Ethernet to VDSL2, making it easy to send high-bandwidth data over long distances (up to 400 meters). This new technology uses traditional coaxial cable instead of expensive Cat.5 cables. Therefore, I wanted to see if using this VDSL2 would make the trip, efficiently and sufficiently for the network without any crosstalk or attenuation. One problem, there is not enough information within the scenario to determine "how" the cable needs to be ran. I do not know if it is through the HVAC system or tunneled.
VDSL2 is converted by Level One VDS-0202 extender. I forgot to add that in my response. It is an Ethernet over VDLS2 extender with 400 meters at 100Mbps downstream. My apologies.
Very interesting points Peter, indeed. Let's play with this one. How about running 100Base-FX? The maximum length of any segment of fiber-optic cabling connecting a station (computer) to a hub is 412 meters. This would eliminate all of the hardware needed in between. Then we have the manpower do the installation.
Not playing games, just looking at some of the options that would be available. You would be surprised how many of my fellow classmates went with CAT 5 or above using 3 switches to make the run of 400 meters. As you mentioned earlier, it is an economic and/or political venture that ultimately chooses how it will be solved. I greatly appreciate your time and you have helped me understand a bit more than I knew before, thank you.
For anyone still reading this topic. The patch v solid cabling refers to the fact that cable cores can be either solid or stranded. Stranded is more flexible. Patch cables terminate with a pin-through-insulation method which does not work well with solid cores. Infrastructure terminates using insulation-cut-by-slot which is not suitable for stranded cores.
In terms of the actual question, use fibre. The single end point will soon become two, and a printer, and an ip phone ... Use the right fibre and you can run kilometers at multigig rates if you need to (now or in the future)
Brian, I will make some assumptions here; so please excuse me for that! Let us say that the upgraded switches uses Gigabit fiber SFP's, as the switch can support either copper of fiber. VDSL seems a bit dramatic, you could simply use a fiber to copper media converter. This method means the media converts a copper connection with auto-negotiation to a fiber interface where duplex and speed is fixed by the connection set by the fiber SFP on the switch. On the other hand you could still have a copper switch converted to fiber and then back to copper at the end client device. Media converters are generally a low cost and a reasonable option when a scenario such as this arises.
