This is similar question if someone ask you how many stars in sky or fruit species in the world? I am not sure the source of Khoreih figure 1507 come from? It also depends upon how you define community seed banks-many of them are just seed display in the structure but without a single seed transaction! We have categorized the functions and services of community seedbanks into three core areas: conservation, access and availability, seed and food sovereignty. If we consider the CSB should have these multiple functions to support farmer seed system then figures might be below 500. Our book published by Earthscan/Routledge series Community seedbanks: history, evolution and prospects, edited by Ronnie Vernooy, Bhuwon Sthapit and Pitambar Shrestha included results from 30 case studies of community seedbanks from around the world but we know many CSBs experiences were not included or our requests not responded. Walter de Boef et al., book published in 2013 highlighted about 326 case studies of community seedbanks from Bangladesh, Brazil, Ethopia, France, India, Mali, Mexico and Nepal (Shrestha et al., 2013). First national workshop of CSB in 2012 by LI-BIRD Nepal reported about 115 CSBs in Nepal alone. The countries with large network of CSBs/Seed Savers Network are in Brazil, Guatemala, Mexico, India, Nepal, USA, Europe, Canada and Australia but none have tried to estimate their total numbers as quite few CSBs are not keen to share information. Discussing with my colleague Ronnie the conservative figures of the functional community seed banks might be some where between 500-550. I love to see this figures are challenged with additional published information. These figures have relevance in digital world in order to wider and inclusive impacts of CSBs in the world and empower farming community, safe guards farmers varieties and rights!
Bhuwon already gave a detailed answer and best-of-our knowledge answer. Of interest perhaps is to add that in the last five years or so we have seen the numbers growing in many countries.
If we add local seed saver clubs and groups (many of which exist without a physical structure) my estimate would increase considerably to several thousands.
