I was wondering what will happen if there is a condition that sunlight is falling on the solar panel and the panel is connected to inverter but not connected to any load for the current flow.
Kindly provide some research papers where this problem is discussed as well.
As you know that a solar PV system follows a non-linear I-V characteristic, at no-load, it will operate at the open circuit voltage Voc which is a value on the x-axis of the I-V curve. Since a no-load condition is equivalent to a infinitely high load resistance, the PV will sense no current conducting path and its terminal voltage shoots to its Voc which may damage the inverter i/p if it is not sized properly considering the no-load condition.
I would like to refer to the equivalent circuit of solar pv cell. It includes a resistance in parallel. Will this play any role in current flow?
Also, will there be any chance of causing damage to solar cell ?

ADDING to what has been said, at no load the solar cell will be operating in open circuit condition. If there is internal shunting resistance it will slightly load the solar cell. This shunt resistance must be high enough such that it will not cause an appreciable loss of the photo voltaic power.
The terminal open circuit voltage given in data sheet is measured with the shunt is present. Open circuit condition means that the there is no load connected to the cell.
Under this condition the photogenerated electrical power will be dissipated in the cell causing some temperature rise compared to the maximum operating power condition.
This operation mode was a subject of debate in the research gate.

But i would stress that this operation mode is safe. However it may affect the operational lifetime of the cells.

The VI characteristics of PV cell is non linear. The chara is such that if the PV cell is open circuited, there will be a voltage ,called open circuit voltage, at terminals.So the situatuion you mentioned is clear from the VI characteristics.
There will be no current through load,but open circuit voltage will be across terminals.So power delivering by the cell too will be zero.
At open circuit condition, the voltage reaches the cell highest voltage and since theoretically current is zero and the power is zero. However, practically there is very small leakage current follow through the cell internal resistance, which is not enough to effect or damage the cell. In general nothing will happen.
At this case of operation the PV array will charge the dc-link capacitor of the inverter to Voc only. But be sure that the inverter can bear the open circuit voltage of the PV array for a long time.
Im doing research on temperature rise in solar cell during open circuit condition. can anybody help me out with formula or methodology to find the rise in temperature when power generated in solar cells are unused?
- In the open circuit (no load) condition, accelerated degradation led by significant gradients of changing temperature results decrement in open-circuit voltage(Voc). as we know open-circuit voltage (Voc) is inversely proportional to the PV module temperature and when it compared with load connected module it receives large thermal cycle.
