Scandium, yttrium and lanthanum are metals. Scandium has 3d1, 4s2 valence electrons, yttrium has 4d1,5s2 valence electrons and lanthanum has 5d1, 6s2 valence electrons. So Scandium, yttrium and lanthanum have d and s orbital for bonding with fluorine. So what kind of chemical bond is formed between them?
Thanks Zhaoxi Sun. In my calculations p orbital is not involve in bonding between Sc/Y and F. Can You please tell that single bond between metals (Sc, Y) and F is ionic or covalent in nature?
Metal-Fluorine bond is ionic.
Good example for understanding from my point of view is following:
- Aluminum coordination number is 3 in Al2O3 . For this structure Al-O bond is covalent.
- Aluminum coordination number is 6 in AlF3 resulting in ionic Al-F bond.
Thanks Mr. Yuri Vladimirovich Barsukov. Aluminum does not behave like Scandium and Yttrium transition metals. As in case of Aluminum, it has 3s2 3p1 valence electrons for bonding but in case of Scandium/ Yttrium the 3d1, 4s2/ 5d1, 6s2 valence electrons are involve in bonding. So Sc-F and Y-F bond will be same like Al-F bond?
