Nursing should be participative, collaborative and empowering (Corner, 1997). Empowerment is concerned with the nurse working interactively alongside a patient to understand, assess and teach clients about the altered physiology of the body, and to comprehend the experience of this, as described by the patient and their family as they try to make sense of their illness (Price, 1996). Therapeutic intervention is therefore at the heart of nursing care. What do you think?
Therapeutic nursing care that can be used to satisfy family care giver's need include encouraging them to talk, listening, understanding and helping them to bear painful feelings.
"Talk, listening, understanding and helping them to bear paintful feelings" are means to identify family caregiver's needs. But... which therapeutics nursing can we implement? Nurses need to register objectively the therapeutic nursing.
I think, it is a big difference under difference culture, amount our chinese, we are selfdomly to speak out the feeling, but, we will show our kindness, treat the patient gentle, they (the relatives) will feeling much more comfortable, even the patient was died. Also, as my experience, if, we appreciate the relatives (sublings) how they show LOVE and respect to their parents, they will show more relief.
Twigg and Atkin (1994) suggest that carers want is: 'recognition, advice, validation of their worth and a chance to talk, rather than major service inputs'. Although my work has been based in primary care, I think many of the findings are equally valid in a hospital setting
It is equally valid in a hospital setting and in primary care. The heart the question is... which therapeutics nursing can implement? Nurses need to register objectively the therapeutic nursing.
It is fundamental to assess and identify first what are the service needs and unresolved problems of these family caregivers' then include them in your planning as this may support and strengthen the family as a whole where most care is given and received. After all the therapeutic interventions, evaluate the result, are they satisfied or not? If not reassess subjectively and objectively.
I with one of my colleagues have led a number of 8 week workshops for family caregivers. The content is focused on developing psychological skills to build resilience and cope with stress. We use techniques of cognitive behavioral therapy, stress reduction, and developing strengths (e.g. social support, faith, rituals of meaning). Unfortunately this is not published. I am collecting data.

Hello All: This sounds like "therapuetic use of self"- the nurse established and uses his/her relationship with the caregiver to elicit issues and provide empathy. Anyone familiar with motivational interviewing- basically let's the individual tell you what they need and you assist (mostly by actively listening) them to discover a solution.
