Fishing communities are usually male cultural and social spaces. I'm studying fisherwomens' activities and challenges and I'd like to get bibliographical suggestions for reading about this subject.
I don't know if this answers your question, but there have been some recent photo journals/dialogues online about the "Ama" in Japan - female divers who fished for shellfish. A link is here: http://gakuran.com/ama-the-pearl-diving-mermaids-of-japan/ or here: http://www.jpf.org.au/onlinearticles/hitokuchimemo/issue31.html
They aren't "academic" sources (this one is academic, but more about breath holding: http://books.google.com/books?id=dZQrAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA25&lpg=PA25&dq=japanese+women+divers+fishers&source=bl&ots=FyZ1jZQW8F&sig=PT7UlHbY2dYOmGccFdhAOJ33ztA&hl=en&sa=X&ei=h5sFVJSiGIn3iwKc-YDIDA&ved=0CFsQ6AEwCg#v=onepage&q=japanese%20women%20divers%20fishers&f=false), but might get you started on a track to follow.
There is a similar group in South Korea, though interestingly, from Jeju island, which was a matriarchal society. Sorry, I can only find a short entry at wikipedia for the moment, but again, it might get you started. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haenyo
I am uncertain if you mean places where women are primary fishpersons or in a general sense. I know of several women - seniors- who live in a large North American city, who fish to supplement their diets. This done out of necessity as their incomes do not cover the cost of rent and food. They catch small fish like perch, and bass to eat.
They are not very recent, but I´ve used these some years ago:

In my country Galicia ( NW Spain) there are some papers that explain the important role of women in management of local fisheries:

many thanks for all your answers and contributions. I´ll take a careful look at each of these. I ´m working a lot and reading / writing a lot too, in order to better delineate my research topic. I´m getting closer to an analysis related to fishing territorialities and gender concerns, as well as different ways for legitimizing fishing performance narratives, again concerning gender issues. I ´m still working on my theoretical review, but I soon as I can I will bring you more news. Thanks a lot!!
