I have find out 25 barriers to product returns and recovery practices in manufacturing industry. I have also conducted survey in industries to get the opinion from people working in manufacturing industry and rated them on scal 1-5. Now i need to find the most dominating barrier and simultaneously ranking of each barrier? What technique i should apply
Let us assume that you wish to weight each of your N responses equally. One man - One vote!
Let us now assume that you have recorded the responses from your survey in a spreadsheet, which has 25 columns for the barriers (A-Y) as found in literature, and N rows, one for each of your N respondents. Add column Z if you or anyone else suggests a new barrier that is not in your literature survey.
Remember to check that no column contains any number outside the range 1-5. Use @min and @ max functions in the spreadsheet. You should also @sum horizontally to check that you have not included anybody too grumpy or overly happy (That is, discard lazy respondents whose ratings sum as 0 to 25 or 125!)
If you now @sum the remaining good columns' entries vertically, you will see which barrier is most heavily rated. You label the most dominating barrier as Barrier #1, the next as Barrier #2, down to Barrier #25, and report this in a table in your research report. Good Question!

I think you can prioritize them based on the Likert scale by using Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods. Different MCDM methods are developed bu for your research topic, TOPSIS is more fit in my point of view.
You may use Failure Mode Effective Analysis (FMEA) tools to identify critical and the severity of the barriers. By weighting on the occurrence and severity level in manufacturing, you may get the top 3 or 5 barriers that matters.
