I want to use sol gel or acid hydrolysis to prepare nanoclay particles from a locally sourced clay. I am looking at comparing the two processes. However i have not been able to come across some works on how to clearly go about this.
Will appreciate your response and guidelines.
The sol-gel process is a wet chemical-technique which was widely used in the fields of material science and ceramic engineering. This methods are used primarily for the fabrication of materials starting from a chemical solution which acts as the precursor for an integrated network or gel of either discrete particle or network clay.
For example the typical precursors are acetic, nitric, chloride,formic and sulphuric acids which undergoes various types of reaction.
Clay may form a sol, if it is washed sufficiently to remove the counter ions.

How can I ensure that the final structure comes out in either of the shapes named aside from dense powder? I will also appreciate if you can lay more emphasis on the reactions that the precursors undergo and if there is an advantage of using one over the other especially with respect to particle size, yield etc.
