I am working on groundwater recharge optimization project in an arid/semi-arid area. Evapotranspiration loss in the area makes approximately 84.2%, while surface runoff is estimated to be 8.02% of the total rainfall. Therefore, so far, the average groundwater recharge is estimated to be around 7.78% of the total rainfall. My project is to increase groundwater recharge rates. We already have designed different recharge optimization structures to reduce surface runoff and increase recharge. However, I really would like to know if there is any mechanism to reduce ET and increase groundwater recharge. There are no surface water bodies in the area, except in some of the swampy areas. What's your opinion then? What are you recommended solutions? How would you increase groundwater recharge in such an area?
