I have calculated the surface water bodies of Ganga river basin for the year 1990,2000 and 2015 using Remote Sensing technology. With this study it was observed that there was change in surface water bodies.So, what are the factors responsible for the change in surface water bodies except anthropogenic activities and from where to get and download those data for the period of 1990-2015?
Naturally, four factor affecting the water body, they are:-
1- Annual potential evaporation.
2-inflow and outflow.
3-Annual rainfall.
4- The amount of deep seepage fro the water body.
5- The amount of lateral inter-flow to water body.

In addition to the previous answers, indeed climate variability and change will affect the surface water storage in an area. Whether the climatic fluctuations are natural or also partly anthropogenic depends on the local conditions, the time period considered and the reference conditions. Climatic fluctuations will affect potential evapotranspiration and precipitation, and also temperature. The temperature will influence the accumulation and melting of snow and ice in the upper reaches of the Ganga basin and hence might result in fluctuations of surface water storage. When analysing the water balance of this area and corresponding fluxes it is important to consider sufficiently long time periods, use high quality data (preferably also in-situ data) and take all major factors influencing the hydrology into account (also the anthropogenic ones if relevant).

It is mostly anthropogenic. Hydrologically the changes may be attributed to rainfall intensity and distribution pattern. Coming to any type of conclusion based on only the Remote sensing data and analysis may not be proper. You may contact National Institute of Hydrology (NIH), Roorkee, where lot of studies on Ganga River Basin is carried out. Good luck.
