My supervisor has done his PhD from America. Sir told me that in America the general procedure is to make supervisor last one in the author list no matter how much he have contributed. Sounded strange to me.
Now, say I am supervising three students. Student number 1 and I contributed the most. We worked to develop the ideas, proved the ideas and so on. Now, as a supervisor should I take the position of last author in the publication OR should I be the second?
What's the best practice and What is the right thing to do! I'm a little confused.

Atanu - it's up for negotiation and mostly depends on how the supervisor would like to be best positioned. Obviously, first author is always the student. Last author can signify 'consultant/expert' author - but not always. Second author should signify that the supervisor has put in the next most amount of work in i.e. ideas, editing etc after the student. It just depends on how the person is best represented and also how institutions view author order. For instance, many institutions 'score' publications according to several factors i.e. Impact Factor - and author order. Second author position would score higher for the supervisor - but, to the wider world, might not be seen as the consultant.
It is more agreement than a rule.
The authors should agree on the order based on who contributed more.
Usually the name of the student is placed first followed by the name of the supervising, or as instructed by the university.
I think there is no matter, who is first or second. All depend upon mutual understanding, cooperation, agreement and self-satisfaction.
