One of the great issues related to the climate change is drought stress. Strategies should be made to meet this challenge because it drastically reduces the yield of a crop or might eliminate a crop from cropping patter in a particular region.
Implementation of crop management practices can potentially alleviate the harmful effects of drought and heat stresses that include soil management and cultural practices i.e. irrigation, crop residues and mulching, and selection of more appropriate crop varieties.
Under heat stress, the application of macro nutrients such as K, Ca and micro nutrients like B, Se, and Mn, which are known to modify stomatal function, can help activate the physiological and metabolic processes contributing to preserving high water potential in tissues thereby increasing heat stress tolerance. The effects of drought have been alleviated through exogenous silicon (Si) application in wheat and rice. Among the plant growth substances, salicylic acid, cytokinin and ABA have been reported to play a key role in drought tolerance. Under water stress conditions, plant growth regulator treatments can significantly increase the water potential and the chlorophyll content.
I agree with haseeb ahmad, Implementation of crop management practices and application of macro nutrients such as K, Ca and micro nutrients like B, Se, and Mn, as well as PGR can potentially alleviate the harmful effects of drought and heat stresses ..
Planting methods ( pit planting in sugarcane), sub soiling, seed priming with saturated lime water in sugarcane, trash mulching and foliar sprays of K during tillering period can help to mitigate the drought stress.
Most of the global soils which were originally 5% or more in soil organic matter are now less than 2% with many less than 1%. One hundred dry masses of soil can absorb less that 30 volumes of water using 1% soil organic matter soil while 100 dry units 5% soil organic matter can absorb over 200 volumes of water. The improvement of soils in organic matter make the effect of drought much less. In addition we need to look to more tolerant and resistant varieties. The focus on the soil needs to be comprehensive nutrients acidity and physical issues. The focus needs to be based on specific goals which can be accurately measured. The systems of production need a focus on regeneration of soil implementing organic amendments and integrating cropping and animal production forestry and pastures and natural environments. In relation to our activities the carbon footprint minimization and sequestration are the orders of the day. While addressing climate change issues the soil based initiatives will also improve the results to environment and the food system and human health.
