Thanks for those references! I was just in Oslo for a week, and would have liked to chat with you about the subject.

This is a wonderful question, one that I have been thinking about for some time. I have found some interesting challenges in relation to doing research through social media: ethics review boards seem to have difficulty in grappling with informed consent. For example, if I analyse your Facebook page to better understand your interests, positions and engagement, and you give me your consent, do I then need to get the consent of the other 900 people in your network?

In relation to the news, it would appear that the softer level of integration is referencing trittwer, Fb and others, and seeking input into mainstream stories, without ever affecting the main , usually defined line of thinking, and the more critical end is in actually letting things evolve without corporate control (the Cuban Five is an excellent example). People making reports, providing feeds, images, videos and content that have not been filtered through an editorial board is a conundrum but is also extremely uplighting. Like many others, I learn much more through the blogs, comments, analysis and posts of others than I do in the mainstream media.

All of this to say that more peer-reviewed research would be helpful, and many good folks are doing some interesting work. My colleague Micahel Hoechsman, at Lakehead University, has written a little on this. Please let me know what you find.

Thanks! It's hard to effectively analyze the journalistic field over the last 20 years without figuring out how to account for the shifts in media news production. The Pew Research Journalism Project has some useful information but they are relatively small-scale surveys.

What's also interesting to me is how we now define mainstream versus "alternative" media. With Google, Yahoo, and the Huffington Post being among the top news aggregators (and overall sources that aren't cable or network news), I don't think we can call them alternative news sources anymore. They have become mainstream.

Still, I find it important to examine MSM sources because they are still a large part of what people consume and share on social networks. Also, I am not sure how we might build a representative data set from Facebook or Twitter that specifically focuses on "news media."

It seems an interesting dynamic is evolving between traditional gatekeepers (journalists) and the gated (news audience)! You may find the following two research studies interesting!

1. In this recent research study (Xu, and Feng, 2014) drawing upon the theory of networked gate-keeping, highlighted how citizens engage in Twitter conversations with journalists and illustrates the power dynamic between traditional gatekeepers  and the gated. The authors discussed the power dynamic along four attributes of the gated—political power, information production ability, relationship with gatekeepers, and information alternatives. The authors argued that the results show that citizens interacted with gatekeepers by sharing information/opinion, social chats, and self-serving promotion of individual opinions and agendas. Politically active citizens interacted more often with journalists who share similar ideology. The citizens have varying degrees of political power, reflected by their different levels of involvement and influence in political discourse online!

• Xu, W. W., & Feng, M. (2014). Talking to the Broadcasters on Twitter: Networked Gatekeeping in Twitter Conversations with Journalists. Journal Of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, 58(3), 420-437. 

2. In this research study, the authors (Marchi, 2012) examined the news behaviors and attitudes of teenagers, an understudied demographic in the research on youth and news-media. Based on interviews with 61 racially diverse high school students, the author discussed how adolescents become informed about current events and why they prefer certain news formats to others. The authors argued that the results reveal changing ways news information is being accessed, new attitudes about what it means to be informed, and a youth preference for opinionated rather than objective news. This does not indicate that young people disregard the basic ideals of professional journalism but, rather, that they desire more authentic renderings of them!

Hi Rebecca, I'd recommend recent work by any of the following: Alfred Hermida, Jane Singer, and Seth Lewis (frequent coauthors Avery Holton and Mark Coddington are also doing quite interesting things). I think these are some of the most interesting and prominent voices out there on the impact of social media on journalism, specifically he production of news.

The web site, MediaShift:  Your guide to the digital media revolution, produced by PBS, deals with, well, digital media!  I don't remember seeing any refereed articles on their site but I get their newsletter daily with 8-10 articles on the topic from various sources.

Thanks, all! I have been traveling the last few days, but will sit down to review all of this over the weekend. I think with all the wonderful resources you've all shared I can begin to grasp the basics. 

Fritze Kohle, your paper looks fantastic! The issue of social media "replacing" more traditional notions of news media is what interests me most, I think, in my struggles to understand the shifts in how we learn about the world around us. For all the "democratizing potential" of new media, the dangers of engaging in media sources that confirm one's bias seems to be more and more the norm, at least in the United States (I am not willing to make any claims about the rest of the world). This is not to say that such behaviors haven't always existed; rather, I want to understand the shifts so that I can make sense about what people "know and learn" from the media.
