The history of the field concept in physics is going back to at least Maxwell (electromagnetic fields). The field concept used in geography and/or GIS is more general. For example, it typically relaxes the requirement that field functions be continuous and allows for nominal attributes. Was this a deliberate choice? By whom and when? Was it discussed in the literature? Or is it a misunderstanding of physics fields? Or just some form of a data model "forgetting" the underlying semantics?
