I am currently working on the adventitious rooting through cuttings, I have used WinRHIZO 2013 software to measure root parameters including root volume. I am confused about the increase or decrease in root volume. Does anyone know that what reasons may cause increase or decrease in plant root volume?
It's hard to answer this, because there are so many variables. Are you talking about monocots or dicots? Are you talking about roots with primary tissues, or roots that will add secondary tissue each year? I'm going to assume you are talking about adventitious roots as they emerge. Most (but not all) roots have single or a two-layer outer covering (epidermis and hypodermis), therefore additional volume can't come from these layers, or from the single-layer endodermis. So the simple answer would be that differences in volume would be expressed in the cortical tissue or the pith tissue. If that's the case, you are asking what factors would influence the number of layer of cortical tissue. Perhaps if you explained your experiment a little it would be easier to answer the question.
Thank you so much for your answer. Actually i am propagating a ornamental tree species through stem cuttings by providing them different exogenous hormones. I analyzed its roots by scanning and using WinRHIZO software and i got different parameters, root diameter, root length, and volume but i am really confused about the volume of the roots. I did not even see any proper research report about the reasons to increase and decrease in root volume. I also need references.

I don't know anything about those programs, but I root a lot of cuttings. As you know, different plants have different rooting preferences. When I work with Viburnum, I often see a difference in the diameter (and therefore, the volume) of the roots produced from my cuttings, and in that particular plant, it seems to correlate with the maturity of the stem tissue from which I take the cutting. A good horticulturalist know how much "bend" there is to a stem that will produce a good cutting; not too flexible or rigid. When I take cuttings from Viburnum stems with just the right amount of "bend", I get fat adventitious roots. If I'm forced to take cuttings from stiff or thin branches, I get thin, weak adventitious roots.
