In view of the above, what competences and personal qualities should have the ideal manager of the 21st century operating in innovative technology companies?

Unfortunately, either in the 21st or even in the 22nd century there will be no ideal managers. There will be real women and men managing other men and women, and sometimes cursing like in the 17th century, despite all new things they will be trying to do together.
Responding seriously, the major quality to be developed in managers is to be able to work in distributed leadership. The Manhattan project was headed by many persons but really leaded by two men -- Leslie Groves and J.Robert Oppenheimer who complemented each other. Today we need 'triplets' and 'quartets' of equally ranked managers complementing each other. For the first time that idea was proposed in a fantastic novel "A quarter of a genius" (1970) by Roman Podolny.
