The slogan "Be Indian, buy Indian" was in, when I lived in India. This is almost 30 years back and then it was much connected to import substitutions policies of a rather isolated India. Since then much has changed, in the 1990s Structural Adjustment changed India's econmic philosophies, amking the country not only an emerging industrial powerhouses, but also a major exporter in many fields. If one exports this much, one also needs to import, meaning somehow the "be Indian, Buy Indian" or "Make in India" actually is no more an economic necessity, but has become more a political slogan, still with the side effect to save foerign exchange and to do something good to the Balance of Payment, which still is a challenge for India, especially a huge trade deficit.
