Faradic reactions in conducting polymers occur throughout the entire bulk. In oxidation, the ions are transferred to the polymer backbone. In reduction, the ions are released from this backbone into the electrolyte. These oxidation-reduction reactions are highly reversible.

The positively charged polymers generated by oxidation on the repeating units of polymer chains are termed as p-doped. The negatively charged polymers generated by reduction are termed as n-doped.
