Both Boeing and Airbus manufacture passenger aircraft. How do they manage to license or use systems which are common for a typical aircraft? E.g. Aircraft Cabin ventilation system.

i.e. how are companies able to distinguish their product from an existing technology? What is the role of technology licensing in it, does technology licensing even play a role in the industry?
