Thanks, Rohit. I am wondering if the dose that we use (120mg/kg, maximum 5 mice/cage) would be hazardous to the staff handling the waste of animals. This was a concern of our safety committee. My understanding is that most of the STZ would have been degraded by the time it's excreted and therefore disposable cage is not absolutely necessary, especially if we do not change the cage/handle the waste for the first 2-3 days after injection.
After STZ administration the animals are kept in a propylene cage like normal animals, there is no serious problem related to streptozotocin, as it is metabolized and excreted out. Some safety measures we have to keep in mind while handling STZ treated animals for few days.
