It is very difficult to obtain the status of incidence of leptospirosis in India . There are 29 states & 7 union territories . Kerala is the only state , which has provided data from every district . Andaman & Nicobar Islands , Gujarat , Maharashtra , Tamilnadu & Karnataka provide data from limited districts . Most of the data have been from published studies from individual researchers in their cities . In some states such as Madhya Pradesh , Chattisgarh , Jharkhand , Bihar , Rajasthan & most of states in N.E. India , except Assam , no published data on human leptospirosis are available . The total number of cases may range from 8000 to 10,000 cases / year . It is difficult to extrapolate the incidence from these data . The probable reason is lack of awareness of the disease & non availability of simple diagnostic tests .
