Your technical background will come in very handy for addressing management issues. From the highest level of an organisation, executive management should be concerned with the major issues of using cloud, such as cloud governance, cloud data quality, cloud data provenance, cloud security, cloud privacy, cloud audit, cloud forensic trail, cloud resilience and business continuity issues, and various compliance issues. The impact of getting any of these areas wrong could be potentially catastrophic for any organisation, and the bigger the organisation, the bigger the potential damage that can ensue from getting things wrong.

Executive management should be setting the scene for company behaviour, first to ensure everything aligns with the corporate mission statement, and the above areas should also be included to ensure proper delivery of requirements. From defining what these goals should be, then the management process can filter all the way down to the lowest levels of the company, ultimately leading to the detailed technical implementation to make it all happen.

Any company that leave these issues entirely to the IT department is asking for trouble. Many companies who do this fail to provide clear details and instruction of what exactly is required, often fail to provide sufficient resources to make implementation possible, and very often fail to arm the ID department with sufficient clout to enforce adherence to what is needed to deliver.

Their principal goals will revolve around complying with legislation, regulation and perhaps appropriate standards. This is necessary to ensure the company is not unnecessarily exposed to potential fines for no-compliance. For example, in the UK, the old Data Protection Act had a limited ability to fine for transgressions ultimately topping out at a maximum fine of half a billion pounds sterling. Whereas the new EU General Data Protection Regulation can fine as high as 20 million Euros or up to 4% of annual turnover, which for large corporates could be massively expensive.

Thus there are now serious incentives to ensure compliance with such legislation and regulation.

When you consider addressing management issues at whatever level within the organisation, it is important to understand how these different layers should all be aligned to ensure everything works properly.I hope that gives you a good start.
