It depends a bit what you want to find out. If you are interested in the dimension of the issue then you might want to consult statistics of health, police and school authorities, which however often underrepresent the challenge.
If you are interested the causes and dynamics then maybe set up some Focus Group Discussions (e.g. with only female members of a class).

I agree with Eberhard, it depends to some extent, on what you want to find out.
I have always believed that qualitative and quantitative approaches should be used in combination, where possible. It strengthens the outcomes and arguments. But, a mixed-method approach is epistemologically pragmatic rather than purist and so you will need to make the argument to justify this research approach, probably in chapter three of your study.
Yes, Focus Group Discussions (e.g. with only female members of a population) BUT people may not be happy disclosing information in such an open session so consider individual interviews too.
Most importantly, what do mean by "gender based"? I have heard a lot about man-on-woman violence and also woman-on-man. BUT what about man-on-man because of gender and woman-on-woman gender based violence. That certainly happens too.
There is the recent phenomenon of gender identity in research, and violence in the homosexual community.
You need to come up with a more precise term that "gender based" to put limits on your study, unless you want to spend several lifetimes researching this.
