The African philosophy of Ubuntu is highly praised for its understanding of one's humanity as the capacity to recognise the other. What is the link between Ubuntu and gender? Is Ubuntu gender neutral, liberative or oppressive? Any resources, ideas, articles and theories towards this end will be much appreciated.
I've written something on this in BibInt (looking at Ubuntu and Nzimande's Imbokodo reading) - 'The Peoples' Bible, Imbokodo, and the King's Mother's Teaching of Proverbs 31', Biblical Interpretation 20/3 (2012): 244-79. (I can't access my copy just now, as I can't go to my office.)
As I understand it, Ubuntu acknowledges every part as significant to the whole and the whole as more important than the constituent parts. Hence, it is a philosophy of inclusion and equity - including where gender is concerned.

Sylvia Tamale (Makerere University) gave a key note lecture on this topic, at a conference in Leeds last year. Please contact her to check whether she's published it. She argued that ubuntu could be mobilised as an indigenous resource in support of gender equality.
