Photoluminescence intensity decreased by adding ions. What is the reason for this?In papers the reason for the decrease in intensity due to quenching phenomenon. But I can't get the clear solution
Decrease in intensity in presence metal ions could be a case of large spin-orbit coupling (SOC) constant. SOC promotes ISC and thereby the emission decreases. This phenomenon is also called heavy metal effect.
In addition to this, first row transition metals have low lying vacant metal centered (d-d) state. Low lying vacant orbitals increase the probability of non-radiative transition and thereby have low emission.
