When a material is heated by irradiating em wave ( may be laser, infrared), the random motion of the material ( rms speed) increases. That is phonons are created from phonons. How this process of photon to phonon conversion can be explained?
If I am thinking in a wrong way, please explain the process of heating by em wave.

An EM wave has photons, not phonons. Phonons are to do with mechanical vibration. When light hits a material, the light can give the atoms the photon energy. This raises the electrons in the atom to a higher energy. This can be re-radiated as light, or some or all of it can stay in the material as vibration or rotation of the chemical bonds that the electrons are in. The amount of vibration is what give us temperature. In a material with a regular atomic or molecular structure, the vibrations are described by phonons.
