I have to house a small species of ants (both body and colony size) to study them.
The preferred way to contain them is to use some kind of petroleum jelly as a barrier that is applied to the border of the terrarium.
What kind of petroleum jelly is the best? (Viscosity, ...)
Are there problems with this technique?

For now I just use common white Vaseline (white petroleum jelly)in and about 1cm width barrier. This works pretty fine with my ants.
But my ants are small and have a small population (and they do not seem to recruit each other). One might have problems with bigger ants or bigger populations.
