Impact of man made forest (Less diversity) and Natural forest (Greater diversity) on GHG and climate change?
Impacts of climate change on the suitability and disturbance (i.e. pest outbreaks) of forest types
Strategies to combat C release: preventing fires, pests and diseases, exploring different tree varieties adapted to new conditions
Strategies to increase CO2 capture by soils and forests, intensifying agriculture that will decrease C release from soil at ploughing and it will increase forest surface
"Combat climate change" was the blatant bias reveal. Seriously, my research question would be: What percentage of the adult American population thinks "the nexus of forests and climate change" is an important topic (and why)?
It is a big question how clean development mechanisms or emission trading can actually contribute to reduction of emissions. It seems to be a way out for polluting industries to carry on pollution and emissions by funding the so called mitigation projects, which is actually cheaper than taking measures to reduce their own emissions, especially when such projects are funded to the developing nations.
Forests remove carbod dioxide from the atmosphere via photosynthesis. After harvesting part of the carbon is released and part is stored in wood products. The contribution of wood products to mitigation is much less known and understood.
I would be really interested in knowing more about how the future distribution of global forest cover, linked to climate change and other environmental changes, will change surface freshwater supplies coming from forested water basins.
In case of global warming at more than normal rates, forest cover would first increase but later reduce. It is because temperate and frigid zones will be hotter and will have more vegetation. However, as global warming increases beyond a limit, the vegetation in the tropical areas would start vanishing and since the areas of tropics is more than temperate areas, total forest cover would reduce. The sub-tropical areas would not have much change in cover, but the species composition may change with increase of more tropical elements.
