I want to explore how to make strategic management to manage solid wastes in an industrial area in a developing country. What is the proper method for this? SWOT analysis and/or any other recent methods?
There are a lot of traditional tools that practitioners use for strategic analysis- SWOT, PESTLE, Michael Porter's five forces, Kaplan and Norton's balanced scorecard. Just have to pick one which works best for you.
Strategic plans are constructed based on stakeholder's view and their perceptions and aspirations. Any technique used for environmental scanning will be useful for drawing up the strategic plan. As rightly observed by Slew, you may use any of these templates for the plan.
In order to be useful for drawing up the strategic plan, as Deshmukh says, I suggest to use Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). There are several studies that deal whit solid wastes and LCA.
As Cassiano answered, I suggest you to consider the LCA analysis which is the tool of the Industrial Ecology to develop properly new and sustainable strategy. Indeed, in my PhD research I developed a study by which, with an IE approach, I create connection among farms to share raw materials in the blend of a fruit juice (already on the market) and I carried out a LCA analysis to test the environmental performance.
You can use the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) to create a strategic plan. After having set your strategic goals, you can use the the BSC to measure haw successful the strategic targets have been met against predetermined key performance indicators.
For a general overview about the application of the Balanced Scorecard please feel free to refer to my research paper: "The Balanced Scorecard and Beyond – Applying Theories of Performance Measurement, Employment and Rewards in Management Accounting Education". In the paper you can find further references. It was published in the International Research Journal of Management Sciences 4 (7), pp. 483-491 and thus can be used for referencing.
