With reference to IoT applications and research parameters, the localization is considered to be crucial. Although, the devices are either ID or IP enabled in such a scenario, how and why is localization is needed?
The Internet of Things will cater a huge number of advanced applications. Presently and also in the future Position based applications either (using Satellite based navigation or Indoor navigation) will become very important. Whether the need for position based applications will arise the need for localization will become important. This may also be important for developing the future Body Area Network (BAN) based applications for personal healthcare and many applications requiring movement which needs to know the path.
There are huge varieties of objects in an IoT system, each with different characteristics, functions and data. These objects need to be identified. Localization is important because so we can understand which device is located where, is connected to what other devices and what kind of data is generating.
In IP case, The two potential solutions are IPv4 and IPv6 solutions. However, since IPv4 can support 32-bit addresses while IPv6 supports 128- bit addresses, IPv6 is more feasible solution. Things get more difficult, since in IoT systems, the majority of objects are not fixed and move through systems. The solution for such items is also called Mobile IPv6.
