It has frequently been mentioned in literature concerning wireless sensor network and collaborative processing about task allocation to sensor nodes. What is a task, in practical sense? Is it something like sensing, communicating, etc? Please explain in brief.
In real-time systems, which deals with embedded systems such as nodes in WSNs and the WSNs themselves, a task is a schedulable function/feature that is executed in a temporal scope defining it is periodic, sporadic or aperiodic, deadlines (typically with respect to requesting a function to be performed), precedence (e.g., task A must be performed before task B). Tasks can be mapped to threads in most run-time kernels and operating systems. A task is typically (but this depends on the architecture) a function that reads/receives sensor data, performs processing and writes/send the output. Apart from this, a task can, of course, have a more specific meaning other contexts.
