All of you know the importance of using the social media application to be a known person within your career. All of you has his/her story. How do you built your career by using these application?
When I decided to switch my career path I posted on FB (in order to communicate to my FB friends) what I was doing and why and immediately a person I have worked with years ago connected to me via inbox asking me to go and talk to him as he wanted to offer me (thru his company) a kind of tuition support for my Masters.
True reputation in your field must be created with blind peer reviewed publications and conference presentations. BUT your reputation on campus and among your closer peers can certainly be affected by your presence on Facebook, Twitter, etc., both positively or negatively, depending on what you post.
The pace of change is accelerating. For example, the development of mobile technology has played an important role in shaping the impact of social media top 5 platforms.
It all depends on what you are trying to achieve and where you believe you will gain the greatest benefit as the result of your efforts if you are posting in a professional capacity.
This is also context specific in that it also depends on where you reside and whether you are aiming for a local audience versus an international audience.
Hence for immediacy as well as potentially an international audience I find twitter useful via @VerranDeborah
Some may find Facebook useful particularly if you are part of a professional group where you can share information
To me, one is no better than the other because basically it all depends on your actual motive whether you want to learn by sharing, collaborating, connecting, or to learn and share by showing off, making self-promotion, and so forth. From another angle, if you are a true learner you can nourish your brain, quench your thirst of knowledge anyway, anytime and anywhere you want.
