What is the most appropriate heat treatment for Al6061 alloy after welding (by TIG method and 5356 filler) in order to achieve the highest strength (yield and ultimate)?
What are the temperature and time variables for this heat treatment?
I presume that your 6061alloy to be welded is initially in the annealed condition before welding. I have attached the data sheet for the filler (5356 alloy). You can see in it that 5356 is not heat treatable while it is well known that 6061 can be precipitation hardened Thus after welding you can adopt the T6 treatment recommended for 6061 for the whole weld assembly that includes the filler.T6 treatment for 6061 involves solutionizing at 510 C, rapid quenching and reheating to 190 C, holding at this temperature for up to 24 hr and then air cooling. (the holding time depends on the section thickness of the parent). The mechanical properties attainable after welding are indicated in the data sheet attached.
