A joint set is defined as system of joints that follow close to similar orientation pattern (both strike and dip). It is always best to orient tunnel alignment as oblique as possible with respect to the most dominating and persisting joint sets. The best is off course a tunnel that is aligned perpendicular to the strike direction of a joint set. This helps to enhance tunnel stability considerably. However, it is not always possible to achieve this due to topographic and location constraints of a planned tunnel. In addition to this, there may be many joint sets that dominate the area.
