Legumes have been identified to have nitrogen fixation capabilities. Some of this nitrogen is used by other non-leguminous plants. When the plants die, they rot and add nutrients to the soil in the form of humus. Hence, they can be used in place of fertilizers that rather cause harm to the earth.
Leguminous plants also bear seeds which are a good source of protein for humans.
In short, research focused on leguminous plants is imperative as it helps provide high quality food, and alternative ways of increasing plant yield.
the role of legumes has rarely been considered in the context of their potential to contribute to the mitigation of climate change by reducing fossil fuel use or by providing feedstock for the emerging biobased economies where fossil sources of energy and industrial raw materials are replaced in part by sustainable and renewable biomass resources.
