Corruption, in addition to providing extensive damage to public coffers in a country, is an attitude that discourages young people to invest in academic life. What is your opinion?
The value system is the keystone of this problem. This comes primarily from education in the family, from the environment and from school. The decreasing role played by the various moral or moralistic systems like religion or ideology leads to follow the waves of mass movements.
In the post-modern economies, these movements, that sometimes have conflicting goals, lead their followers to a strongly asymmetric moral formation. Therefore, there is a fundamental inconsistency about what is good or what is bad according Tonnies or what is just and what is unjust according to Durkheim.
In this confusion, the collective morality is created by the mass media and especially by television and press. Also in this case, the creation of morality is patchy.
There is no longer a scale of common and shared values.
Corruption I think is equally distributed among the educated classes and the less educated. The difference is that in the former the "opportunity" to be corrupt and be bribed are greater than in the latter where the individuals or go directly to organized crime or to petty crime. However, these are two different sides of the same coin.
It is unfortunate and disheartening to know that many of those who are corrupt and engage in corrupt practices are the elites of our societies. This is not to say education teaches one to be corrupt, but that it is being used by some people to amass wealth unto themselves unlawfully. Paradoxically, investing in education is also an antidote to addressing the problems of corruption bedeviling many nations of the world. By education, here, I do not mean only formal, institutionalized education, but inclusive of such measures aimed at re-orienting the people (the leaders and the led, the young and the old, the haves and the haves not, everyone!) on what constitutes real success in life. I mean a radical change in our value system!

Unfortunately in Brazil decreases, the formation of new researchers who do not receive adequate investment from the Government, on the grounds that there is no money for investment
While the people do not know elect the politician who defends the interests of the population, this will always happen. It is a cultural problem in my country
It is hard to accept, but i live in a Beautiful Country with the most Corrupted Politicians.
It definitely affects the investment in academic life.
I totally agree with dear Ting Fa, Corruption is equally distributed among the educated classes and the less educated. The opportunity to get corrupted is even higher in the educated classes..... But Education doesn't teach to be corrupted. We should start educating our new generation from home.
So, the only thing we can do is being Optimistic and led by Example.
It really very dangerous situation for education in a country with high rate of corruption. Academic performance are sometimes certified by the corrupts persons which is nothing but a joke of education.
Thank you for the relevant question. Investment is academic life is not only for career progression but also for self-satisfaction or even self-actualization. Since corruption is one of the gravest social evils, creating a better academic lives in such countries can be a way to rid the country of corruption. Of course, one gets frustrated at times when investment (not only money but also efforts and commitment) in academic life in countries like mine (Nepal) turns out to be futile. Patience is highly called for, however !
