We would like to investigate the possible advantages and challenges of integrating AI in dental laboratory technology. It is hoped that the results, will add value to dental laboratory community in general by providing insights on the advantages and challenges of integrating AI in dental laboratory technology and thereby enable dental technicians to understand this technology.
Broadly speaking, the etherealization of all medical devices is a trend that hasn't fully played out yet; neither has the transition to prompt engineering.
Etherealization: where before you might make a specialised device with a high quality sensor (and software was an afterthought), now it's all about the cheapest possible sensor (usually something from an off-the-shelf device) with the most sophisticated software. At scale this makes sense, because the cost of the more expensive software development process gets spread out over a larger number of devices. Expect increased use of mobile phone cameras in all aspects of dentistry, even in places where it sounds stupid. The Samsung S24 has a 200 megapixel camera and can have external-affixed lenses: not very many dentaltech devices are even in that ballpark for resolution.
Prompt engineering: where before we fine-tuned image models, the trend is going towards vilm (combined vision and language models) combined with prompting, since that gives the end user greater flexibility.
Weird prediction: I'll predict we'll see (eventually) lots of end-user modifiable models that capture via phone that patients deploy for their own use (under the guidance of a dentist).

I agree with the above; however, there are those who argue that there could be another aspect that negatively impacts dental technicians as a consequence of this integration with artificial intelligence
