There is a lot to do about learning analytics. Some of the analysis is done by tracking the cursor movements of students while using software. There is also research on the eyemovement while scanning content. What do we know already and adds to the success of the student while learning?

There has been work done in this area at Carnegie Mellon robotics department. Also a recent article on education research in Scientific American I believe also linked to this type of monitoring.

I think there is no effect of eye-tracking on learning, but you can explore effects of learning on gaze behavior via eye-tracking. There are some interesting pieces of research about task difficulty and eye-tracking and about whether you can see learning strategies through eye-tracking. May be another interesting area of research for you will be about the differences between experts and novices in gaze behavior. There are first attempts to use gaze tracks of experts to increase learning of novices.

Dear colleagues, I attach a conference presentation that I did on eye tracking. I indeed only report on the pilot study, but I believe some of the uses of eye tracking is evident in the presentation (for instance, heat maps and gaze plots). I noted with interest Allan's reference to the work of Mayer, since it would underlie research such as this (investigating the use of graphics in an online environment).
