Does anyone know of any study to differentiate LPS toxicity among different inbred strains of mice? In particular, I would like to know the absolute lethal dose of BALB/C and C57BL/6. Literature seems far too wayward in this, the type and quality of LPS being a significant source of variation. Any insights, suggestions, comments would be welcome.

I don't think there are any studies that would give you the answer. The lethal LPS dose differs not only by strain on mice and type of LPS, but also by the batch or lot of LPS. Also even same mice strains in different facility respond differently to LPS toxicity. I suggest that you buy a big batch of LPS (we use cat No. L2880 from Sigma), and try different doses on your mice strains. Typically 18-25 ug/g for Bl/6 is a good range. Not sure about Balb/c. Hi Ali, even I use the same LPS. I have been trying different doses in 4 diff inbred strains. And I have experienced the same facts that you listed out. That's why I wanted to know if there are existing reports in literature.

You may try to collect some first-hand data by yourself. Since the regular mouse is not expensive, and it's affodable to get those data if there is not enough literatures to report it. Good luck.
