In loop quantum gravity, space-time is a network, and nodes replace the smooth background of Einstein’s theory of gravity. Loop quantum gravity studies bits; on the other hand, string theory studies the behavior of objects within space-time.
They are very different theories, that sometimes lead to the same conclusions or they answer questions that the other cannot. So, it was conjectured at one time that the two should be clearly related. However, this has never been realised. The two have different goals, string theory offers a potential unification scheme, while loop quantum gravity offers a potential theory of quantum gravity.
You should read Lee Smolin's "Three Roads to Quantum Gravity". He explains all this far better than anyone could here. You have asked a very wide question.
Yes you are right the can be compared, but no compaction has any experimental support. It is the same problem like the problem of deity in any religions. Cannot be proved as disprove without physical prof of their existence.
