the answers you find above have addressed the basic issues of the difference between station and gridded data. However, I may add that gridded data normally contain station data or measurements from satellite that undergo a careful interpolation over a regular grid (normally global) and an adequate analysis for:
- biases
- outliers
- error characterization etc.
So, the best products you find around are quality controlled and suitable for use either in data assimilation or in statistical/physical process studies.
I would finally like to direct you to the International Precipitation Working Group (IPWG) web site where you find links to datasets of precipitation from satellite. They are all free of charge and ready to be used.

When you use station data(such as synoptic station, climatology station, agricultural station, and etc.), you just use the data for a point scale (with lat and Lon of the station), but when you use gridded data you can apply different meteorological data for a region that the area of the region is depend on the resolution of applied gauge.
For example AgMERRA gauge can produce weather variables with 0.5deg*0.5deg or 0.25deg*0.25deg.
As well, the gridded datasets can be divided into three categories: gauge-based such as APHRODITE, satellite-based like PERSIANN and TRMM, and merged satellite-gauge products such as AgMERRA and CRU.
According to the last comments, we can achieve the differences between station data and gridded datasets.
In many cases the gridded datasets have strong ability to use in studies that we don't have enough stations, you can refer to the following paper:

Gridded data is geographically a large distribution of data....1degree ×1 degree gridded data means 111x111kms...And station data is location specific which represents a district....A village or a town
