I recently read and replied to a thread about the "ownership of education", which put me on the track of a concept commonly heralded in Sweden and Germany - "Bildung" (Germany) and "Bildning" (Sweden). The concept is tricky as you compare it to literacy, as scholars tell me they do not hold the same philosophical underpinnings. I would therefore appreciate if some could direct me to some great (English) literature that unfolds it in a scholarly and understandable way.
