I am currently reviewing a paper and it is a species description. I have read countless descriptions over the years and quite frequently non-native and native english speakers alike omit determiners like the artcles “the”, “a/an”, demonstrators “these, those, possessives and quantifiers… I have always put it down to the fact that the facts and details take priority in terms of content thus making this grammar superfluous...... I believe that without the "superfluous" articles, the papers are often easier to gather quickly the important information but when reviewing I'm conflicted. For taxonomic descriptions, perhaps it is an unwritten rule that this is the style to follow but I was hoping for some insight from other researchers particularly in the entomological realm.
